Not All Therapy Is Created Equal: Why the Right Fit Matters

Let’s be honest—therapy isn’t magic. It’s not a one-size-fits-all prescription for pain. And it definitely isn’t always the warm, validating, life-changing experience people on Instagram make it out to be.

If you’ve tried therapy before and walked away thinking, “That was… underwhelming,” or “I felt worse after,”—this one’s for you.

Because here’s the truth: not all therapy is created equal. And not all therapists are the right fit for you.

Wait… so it wasn’t my fault therapy didn’t work?

Nope. Therapy is a relationship. And like any relationship, if it lacks safety, chemistry, trust—or just straight-up relevance to your life—it won’t work.

If you’ve ever:

  • Been told to “just challenge your thoughts” when your nervous system was in full panic mode
  • Felt misunderstood, pathologised, or labelled
  • Left sessions more confused or activated than when you walked in
  • Wondered if you were “too complicated” or “too resistant”

…you didn’t fail therapy. The therapy failed you.

Why Right Therapy matters (more than you think)

The “right” therapist isn’t just someone with credentials. It’s someone who gets you—your background, your pace, your humour, your hesitations. Someone who understands that healing doesn’t happen in a vacuum. That your trauma, your neurodivergence, your cultural identity, your lived experience all matter.

At inMind, we specialise in working with people who’ve had complicated experiences—with life and with the right therapy. We’re trauma-informed, neurodiversity-aware, and allergic to one-size-fits-all approaches.

Red flags (a non-exhaustive, slightly spicy list):

  • You felt like a “case” or diagnosis, not a person
  • Sessions were rigid, scripted, or dismissive of your actual concerns
  • You were rushed into trauma processing before trust was built
  • Cultural identity, gender, or neurodivergence were ignored—or misunderstood
  • You left feeling worse, blamed, or like you had to perform “good client” behaviour

If that’s your experience, you’re not broken. You’re discerning.

Okay, so what should therapy feel like?

Right Therapy should feel like a soft place to land. A place where you can bring the messy, raw, contradictory parts of yourself and not be judged. A space where your therapist isn’t trying to fix you—but rather walk alongside you with curiosity, skill, and deep respect for what you’ve been through.

You should feel:

  • Seen, not scrutinised
  • Challenged, but only when you’re ready
  • Respected, even when you don’t have the words yet
  • Safe enough to show up as you are (f-bombs, tears, silences and all)

At inMind, here’s what we offer instead:

We work differently. Whether you’re accessing therapy in North East England, online therapy across the UK, or seeking international online therapy—we tailor our work to you.

  • Trauma-informed care that prioritises safety and consent
  • A neurodiversity-affirming approach (we don’t see your brain as a “problem to solve”)
  • Flexible online sessions and in-person options for those local to the North East
  • Deep respect for your pace and lived experience
  • EMDR, mindfulness, and evidence-based strategies rooted in relational work
  • Transparency, collaboration, and zero judgement

You deserve the right therapy fit. Full stop.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve “been to therapy before.” If you’ve never felt truly supported, heard, or empowered in that space, it might be time to try again—with someone different.

Right Therapy is too important to settle for meh. You deserve more than generic scripts and surface-level fixes. You deserve something real, relational, and responsive to you.

And if you’re ready—or just curious—we’re here.
